朱古力瘤屬於子宮內膜異位症的一種，是由於月經時有經血逆流，逆流的經血可以被身體自行吸收，但是有部分經血無法被吸收，最後附著在卵巢上，就會造成卵巢子宮內膜異位瘤，即是俗稱的朱古力瘤。
在中醫角度，病變性子宮瘤稱為「癥瘕」。「癥」指腹中結塊的病，堅硬、不移動、固定部位痛楚；「瘕」同樣是腹中結塊的病，但結塊時聚時散，而且痛楚是沒有固定部位。臨床上往往發現是先癥後瘕。
